🌱 March & April Sustainability Update

Spring is underway and the plots are waking up. Here are a few quick eco‑friendly tips for early‑season growing:-

🌿 March Tips (Quick Recap)

  • If you have a greenhouse, clean any grime from the glass.  This reduces pests and diseases, and increases light levels

  • Turn compost and mix in cardboard or dried leaves

  • Check water butts and make sure you can catch that inevitable Spring rain

  • Wash and reuse pots and trays for seed sowing

🐝 Wildlife-Friendly March

  • Plant early nectar flowers, eg primroses, aubretia (bees love it!)

  • Leave a small “messy corner” for insects and hedgehogs

🌼 Pollinator-Friendly Planting

  • Early Spring: Primrose, lungwort (pulmonaria), borage, calendula, cornflowers

  • Late Spring: Foxglove, alliums, geranium

  • Summer: Lavender, echinacea, sunflowers

(Plant a mix to keep something blooming from March to October

🌿 April Tips

  • Mulch beds to keep moisture in and weeds down

  • Sow hardy spring crops such as beetroot, chard and spinach

  • Use reused jars or tubs as mini cloches

  • Plant herbs (thyme, oregano and mint) to support pollinators

  • Make the most of April showers, and keep water butts ready
