🌱April / May Sustainability Notice – Growing Greener Together!

Hello lovely plot‑holders! May is here, the sun is stretching its arms, the rain is doing its thing, and (let’s be honest) the weeds are having an absolute party. As we all get stuck into the growing season, here are a few fun, planet‑friendly tips to keep our allotments thriving sustainably:-

🌿 Skip the Plastic Weed Matting If you’re thinking about weed suppression, try natural alternatives instead of plastic-based matting. Cardboard, hessian, jute or other natural fibres break down beautifully, feed the soil, and don’t leave behind microplastics.

🐸 Thinking of a Pond? Go for It! If you haven’t already, consider adding a wildlife pond - even a washing‑up bowl sunk into the ground works wonders. Frogs will soon move in, and they’re brilliant little helpers when it comes to keeping slugs under control.

🐌 Speaking of Slugs … Let’s Go Chemical‑Free Please avoid chemical slug pellets; they’re harmful to frogs, birds, hedgehogs and other wildlife. Instead, try rough-textured barriers like straw, crushed eggshells or wool pellets. Slugs hate scratchy surfaces, and your garden friends will thank you.

🚲 Greener Ways to Get to Your Plot If you’re able, why not cycle or walk to your allotment? It’s good for the planet, good for your health, and you arrive already warmed up for a good session on the plot.

🌾 Weeds, Weeds Everywhere … With the sunshine and showers, weeds are popping up faster than we can say “where did that come from?” Please try to avoid pesticides; they’re costly, harmful to wildlife, and often unnecessary. If you’re a no‑dig fan, thick mulching works wonders. Or try companion planting to reduce bare soil, which helps keep moisture in - less watering needed, win win! But if you’re like me and love getting stuck in with a trowel or a spade, digging is great exercise. Who needs a gym membership when you’ve got an allotment?

Hope this brings a smile and helps spread a bit of green inspiration.

Best wishes, and happy growing!
